If you want your website to be discovered in Google and other search engines, you need to submit your sitemap to the Google search console.

An XML Sitemap is a document that helps Google understand your website by listing your website’s important pages, making sure Google can find and crawl them all. It also helps in understanding your website structure to tell search engines what content is available and how to reach it. 

The XML sitemap allows you to specify additional information about each URL on your website, such as:

• When it was last updated
• How often the site changes
• How important the page is in relation to other pages on the site

How to generate XML Sitemap

Step 1: One of the simplest ways to generating the XML Sitemap is by using the Yoast SEO Plugin. There are lot of plugins out there but we recommend Yoast SEO as its free and can be installed easily.

Click on Install and Activate this plugin

Step 2: Click on SEO on the left navigation bar and Yoast SEO icon

Step 3: Click on the Features tab on the top. Scroll down and you’ll see XML Sitemaps auto turned on. If by any chance its turned off, please turn it on.

Step 4 : Click on the ? icon on the XML Sitemap. This will show “see the XML sitemap”. Click on this and a new tab will open

Step 5 : This new page will show the XML Sitemap generated by Yoast and different sitemaps. But what is more important is the url of this page : https://digital-doorway.com/sitemap_index.xml

Step 6: Copy this url and head over to your Google search console account.

Step 7: When you open the Search Console, you will see a menu on the left-hand side navigation of the screen. Here you will find Sitemaps. Click on this.

Step 8: Paste the URL in the “Enter sitemap url” and click submit.

Step 9: If all goes well, then the Success message will be shown under the status column. It might not show instantly upon submission. You’ll have to log out and check after few hours to see the status.

Step 10: When the sitemap has been successfully added, click on the Coverage button on the side navigation. It will show you an overview of all pages in your sitemap. It will also show all the URL’s that are validated and ones with errors.
