Its being reported that Microsoft is going to add OpenAI’s ChatGPT to its Bing search engine.
This feature update is expected to launch by the end of March 2023 and is intended to give a much needed boost to Bing which has been struggling against Google for several years.
OpenAI and Microsoft declined to comment.
Microsoft & OpenAI Partnership
Microsoft, back in 2019 had backed OpenAI with a $1bn funding and the 2 had formed a partnership to develop AI Supercomputing technologies on Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service.
Again, in October 2022, news broke that Microsoft was in talks to make a second investment in OpenAI worth tens of billions of dollars in the AI business.
Since then, Microsoft & OpenAI have been collaborating to integrate ChatGPT into Bing, though its still not clear if the current version of ChatGPT will power the Bing search engine.
OpenAI released ChatGPT-3 in 2021 and then updated to ChatGPT-3.5. The company has announced that ChatGPT-4, a more advanced version is in development, but has so far not provided any launch date.
A Challenge To Google
Today Google is the world’s top search engine handling upwards of 90% of all online search queries. Bing on the other hand is a distant second processing around 9% of worldwide searches.
Despite decades of absolute dominance, Google has declared “Code Red” shortly after ChatGPT was opened to users worldwide in November 2022. Google even went as far as recalling its founders Larry Page & Sergey Brin as per a source in New York Times. The surprise return is to explore and approve plans to launch Google’s own ChatBot in its search engine.
Google has been at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technology in the field of artificial intelligence and natural language processing. Their language model is a prime example of this expertise, powering many of the company’s products and services with its ability to understand and generate human-like text.
Google’s language model has a wide range of applications, from language translation and text-to-speech synthesis to question-answering and content generation. It is used in many of the company’s popular products and services, such as Google Translate, Google Assistant, and Google Photos.
With all its technological edge Google has been hesitant to introduce a platform like ChatGPT. So what makes Microsoft so confident that it can integrate ChatGPT into Bing Search without any flaws? This remains to be seen.
Its also worth noting that ChatGP intends to introduce a paid plan in coming months although the Free version will also be open.
